New Paintings: THE MEMORY FRAGMENT SERIES

Elizabeth Samet is a first generation American and the child of Holocaust survivors. Her multi-media paintings explore the idea of lost history, broken memory and trans- generational trauma.

By integrating, expanding, and regenerating the small amount of imagery that she had access to, she traces the importance of myth and memory. The pieces incorporate photographs and motifs like knots, stitches and books to provoke an emotional and psychological response reminiscent of understanding an ancestor by rifling through their junk drawer or poking through boxes in an attic.

In the Memory Fragment series, each work exists alone and also as a fraction of a family tree that is as likely to be completely a fable as it is truth. In the end, there is a story here with no one to tell it. What is destroyed remains lost but this emotional excavation attempts to bring understanding of the trauma that extends from one generation to the next.
